Description

After winning the 1966 All-American Soap Box Derby Championship in Akron, Ohio, David Krussow poses for a black-and-white photo with his parents and an official. Homemade races cars powered by gravity would reach speeds of 25 miles an hour. Back in the 50s and 60s, there were over 160 Soap Box Derbies held across the country and the championship was held at Derby Downs in Akron every July. The derby was inspired by neighborhood boys racing homemade cars on a Dayton street in 1933.
