Description

David Krussow waves to the crowd and holds a checkered flag as he rides in a parade in Akron, Ohio, after winning the 1966 National Soap Box Derby. The national championships have been held in Akron since 1934 when youngsters from 34 cities across the country competed. The winner of the first national soap box derby race was from Muncie, Indiana, and he made his car from the wood of a saloon bar. A couple of hundred racers from across the country compete in the race with homemade Soap Box Derby cars powered by gravity.1966
