Description

Before he began his race at the 1966 National Soap Box Derby championship in Akron, Ohio, a 12-year-old David Krussow got some input on strategy. Krussow put the advice to good use and he won, giving him the national title. By winning, Krussow received a $7,500 college scholarship. Krussow and Greg Schmacher of Tacoma are still the only Washington qualifiers to win a national title. In 1999, Megan Taylor of Charleston, West Virginia, became the youngest to win nationals at 8 years old, and in 2011 Allison Bates of Twinsburg became the oldest at 17 years, 8 months.
