Description

A 12-year-old David Krussow helps put his homemade race car into place at the starting line of the 1966 National Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio. For the second time in two years a driver from Tacoma won the race as Krussow cruised to victory as he reached speeds of about 25 mph. Gregory Schumacher of Tacoma won the soap box derby's national championship in 1964. They are the only two qualifiers from Washington to win the championship in the first nine decades of the race. In the late 1950s, race organizers began providing identical wheels to each racer to stop kids from souping up their wheels.
