Description

A 12-year-old David Krussow kneels by his soap box derby race car wearing a T-Shirt he got after winning the National Soap Box Derby race in Akron, Ohio, in 1966. On his homemade car, Krussow's dad included his son's name and the Tacoma News Tribune. The prototype for the stock derby car was built by Kenny Cline, who won the 1967 national race. He spent 1,400 hours building his childhood car, but the kit car he designed could be assembled in four hours. A derby car costs between $450 and $600 in 2015, depending on the division. Wheels cost another $120.
