Description

In this picture, drivers sit in their derby cars as they await the start of the Tacoma Kiwanis Soap Box Derby in 1966. David Krussow won the race that year and went on to win nationals in Akron, Ohio. The local race became a popular event, which was near Cheney Stadium, but it has stopped and is no longer done. Derby cars are homemade and run on gravity. No motor is used. The national championship event in Akron, Ohio, became a celebrate draw. Movie star Jimmy Stewart made the most appearances with six visits. Rock Hudson, Tom Hanks, Diana Shore and comedians Bud Abbott and Lou Costello also came to the race.
