Description

Taking the checkered flag, David Krussow crosses the finish line first in his race at the Tacoma Soap Box Derby in 1966. The race track is near Cheney Stadium and fans lined the track to watch. There were bleachers at the finish line. Tacoma began holding a soap box derby race back in the 1930s, but the city no longer puts on the event. A 10-year-old Floyd Riggs won the Tacoma Soap Box Derby back in 1936 and competed at the national championships in Akron, Ohio.
