In this black-and-white photo from the 1950s, a towing truck pulls the City of Tacoma racing car that Leo Dobry drove in the famed Indianapolis 500. Tacoma became a hub for car racing back in 1914 when the city built an oval 2-mille, wooden track that was considered to be one the of best tracks in the country. The Tacoma Speedway was considered to be second only to the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In March 1920, the race track's grandstands were burned down in an arson fire. However, the rebuilt stands were an impressive upgrade for fans as covered seating, new fencing and pedestrian tunnels were built.Lexicon
