Description

Dave Kerrone began his lifelong passion for sports as an athlete at Stadium High School in Tacoma. Kerrone played football and was a guard for the Tigers basketball team and a sprinter and jumper in track and field. Kerrone had the distinction of providing the game’s only points on a 55-yard touchdown run when the Tigers beat the Lincoln Abes in 1956. Upon graduation, Kerrone played football and track and field at Washington State University from 1958-62 then began a 35-year teaching and coaching career in the Clover Park School District. Kerrone also officiated basketball in Pierce County for 30 years, including officiating 12 state tournaments. He also umpired baseball, modified fastpitch and slow pitch softball. He was rewarded for his work behind the plate and in the infield that Kerrone was selected to umpire at five modified fastpitch national championship tournaments. Kerrone also was one of the top handball players in the state for more than 40 years, winning state singles and doubles titles. Kerrone was inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame for officiating, football, baseball in 2007. Photo donated by Marc Blau.
