Description

St. Leo’s was a long-standing community pillar by the time this undated photo was taken, having been founded in 1879 by Father J.B.A. Brondel that boasted a congregation of 18 on the corner of Division Street and Tacoma Ave. They relocated to South 13th Street and Yakima Ave. by the turn of the century when they purchased a political hall and built a massive — especially for the era — 2,200 seat church that eventually burned to the ground and sent the congregation back to the school gym. The Jesuit tradition started in 1911 and the St. Leo’s eventually morphed into what is now Bellarmine Preparatory School, first for boys in 1928 and then adding girls in 1974, merging with Aquinas and St. Leo’s. Bellarmine won its first city basketball championship in 1949.
