Description

This undated photo shows a basketball team from St. Leo’s in Tacoma, which was opened in 1912 as a primary school for girls and boys and a high school for boys. The Franciscan Sisters ran the primary school while the Jesuits ran the high school. In 1926 brothers David and John McAtsocker arrived and, both Jesuit priests, built Bellarmine Preparatory School and started it with an enrollment of 150. Volunteers from Holy Names Society, Philomathea, Knights of Columbus, and St. Leo's Alumni Association were significant in establishing the school. The school eventually began accepting girls in 1974, becoming the first Jesuit school in America to offer co-educational opportunities.
