Description

St. Leo’s Catholic Parish — now St. Leo’s Jesuit Parish — was a forerunner for what would become Bellarmine Preparatory School, which was established as a secondary school in 1928 after Father David McAstocker and his brother John started the school in 1922 as a primary school. The school’s first graduating class in 1929 conferred diplomas on 19 students. Athletic fields were built in 1930 and the Bellarmine Booster Club for athletics was started in 1945 and, not surprisingly, athletic success started in large fashion soon after, with a city title in football in 1947 and in football in 1949. A new gym for basketball was completed in 1958 and the Lions went on to become one of the most long-standing athletic powers in the city.
