Description

A team of mostly lower- and working-class athletes struggling to get by during the Great Depression famously dominated the sport of rowing at the University of Washington and won a gold medal at the 1936 Olympics in Germany. The team is the subject of the 2013 best-seller “The Boys in the Boat” by Daniel James Brown. The team included 1933 Puyallup High graduate George “Shorty” Hunt, third from left. From left to right, Don Hume, Joe Rantz, Hunt, Jim McMillin, Bob Moch (kneeling), John White, Gordy Adam, George Day and Roger Morris. The boat, the Husky Clipper, was later loaned to Pacific Lutheran University to help the Lutes start their rowing program. George "Shorty" Hunt is Kathi Grogan's father.
