Description

Here is a photo of two postcards taken during World War I. The top picture is of a football game at Stadium High School with Camp Lewis playing against the Marines. The bottom shot is of Camp Lewis soldiers saluting. In 1916, Camp Lewis, which today is called Joint Base Lewis-McChord, was built as a military base during WWI. It became known as Fort Lewis in 1927. The photos were taken in Stadium Bowl, which became a popular site for hosting events along with Lincoln Bowl. When Stadium Bowl opened in 1910, it had a seating capacity of 32,000, over double the size of today. It has hosted big-name events for Louis Armstrong, Babe Ruth and presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and Warren Harding. Washington State Cougars played there twice in the 1940s. In 2008, Stadium Bowl was chosen by ESPN as one of the best high school football stadiums in the country.
