Description

Wearing the #5 jersey, Joey Johns was a former defenseman for the Tacoma Rockets from 1946-51. Johns earned all-star honors with the Rockets in 1948-49. He also won a City League Championship with the Tacoma Elks Club and eventually became a referee in the Western Hockey League for 18 seasons from 1952-70. Johns, a Winnipeg, Manitoba native, helped form a Tacoma high school league that lasted from 1948-50. Johns was inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. The Rockets were a professional team that played in Tacoma from 1946 to 1953. Tacoma played in the Pacific Coast Hockey League until becoming a member of the Western Hockey League during the 1952-53 season and relocating to the Tacoma Ice Palace.
