Description

Lincoln High School alum Jerry Williams was a bona-fide athlete throughout his life in track and field and football earning letters in both sports all three years. Williams, seen in this black and white photograph competing in the hurdles event at the 1960 Outdoor Championships for the University of Iowa, anchored the 880-yard relay to an undefeated season, a state record and the state title. During his senior year he was undefeated in the 120-yard high hurdles, 180 low hurdles and the long jump until the state meet. In football Williams was named an all-city, all-conference and all-state first-team All-American as a wide receiver/linebacker for the Abes. Williams success continued at the college level where he excelled in football and track and field at Iowa. Williams played for the Hawkeyes’ Big-10 Championship team that was ranked No. 2 in the country. In track, he was an NCAA finalist in the 400 hurdles and at the National AAU meet in the 220 low hurdles. Williams retired from track and field when he raced his brother, John Scott, in an open meet at the University of Washington and John Scott beat him in the 120 hurdles. Williams graduated in 1962 with an accounting and business major and literature minors. Photo donated by Williams Realty Group.
