Description

Rob Webster was an outstanding athlete in two sports, cross country and swimming. Born in Tacoma, Webster attended Wilson High School where he swam under the tutelage of Washington State Sports Hall of Fame coach Dick Hannula, Sr. A three-year letter winner, Webster earned All-America swims in 1977 as the anchor for the Rams in the state-winning 200-yard medley relay. During that same time, Webster, shown in this black and white photo running for the University of Washington against Oregon State at Husky Stadium in 1981, placed second in the 800 meters and anchored Lincoln’s winning mile-relay to the 1978 state title. The following season, Webster placed third in the 800 and was part of the second place mile relay at the state meet. At Washington, Webster lettered in cross country for one season, track and field for four and became one of the nation’s top 800 runners. Webster, who set a school record in that event in 1982, placed second at the Pac-10 Championships and earned NCAA All-American status. Webster went on to compete for the prestigious Nike Track Team, finishing sixth in the U.S. Championships in 1983 and ran at the U.S. Olympic Trials in 1984. Webster was inducted into the Washington State Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. Photo donated by Rob Webster.
