Leo Dobry sits in his speedy race car named City of Tacoma. Back in 1949, it took Dobry, a racing enthusiast, six months of hard work and approximately $20,000 to build his maroon-and-cream race car. He had his race car built at the Kurtis-Kraft plant in South Gate, California, in 1946. He raced his “City of Tacoma” race car at the Indianapolis 500 on Memorial Day 1949 and placed 26th with Jack McGrath driving after qualifying third. Qualifying seed was 127.4 miles per hour. In 1948 with Hale Cole driving, Dobry's car raced in the Indianapolis 500 for the first time.Lexicon
