Description

Lou Whittaker is a mountaineering icon who started guiding on Mount Rainier when he was 19. This would become his life’s work. In 1969, he and Tacoma attorney Jerry Lynch founded Ashford-based Rainier Mountaineering Inc., which has guided more people to the top of Rainier than any other company. Whittaker has climbed the peak 250 times. RMI is now run by Whittaker’s son, Peter. Whittaker also guided extensively around the world. His twin brother, Jim, was the first American to climb Mount Everest in 1963. This image was used as a secondary picture on the cover of the 1995 book he wrote with Andrea Gabbard: “Lou Whittaker - Memoirs of a Mountain Guide.”
