Description

Merle Hagbo, a 1952 graduate of Lincoln High School, made a mark in Pierce County athletics as a baseball coach and football official. After playing quarterback for Humboldt State in Arcata, Calif., Hagbo had a successful career coaching baseball at Clover Park High School from 1963-96, winning three South Puget Sound League championships and finishing second in state in 1973. Hagbo was named District 8 Coach of the Year in 1972 and 1973 and the Washington State High School Coach of the Year in 1973. Hagbo served as a football official for 50 years, including 27 at the Division II, II and NAIA college level. He was an official at the 1995 NAIA national championship game between Central Washington and Findlay at the Tacoma Dome, which ended in a 21-21 tie. Hagbo was inducted into the Washington State High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1988 and is a member of the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame.
