Description

David Mathews, shown pitching for Orlando in November 1991, got better with age. While he had plenty of experience in Southern California, Mathews reached his peak playing for teams in his 30s, 40s and 50s in Tacoma. Mathews played for the Washington Senators’ World Series teams, the Florida Masters, Seattle White Sox and Tacoma Cascades. He pitched against the Soviet Olympic team, was named MVP of the Northwest Classic in 1993, batted .429 in the 1998 Nike World Masters game, hit for the cycle in the 1997 MSBL World Series (including two inside-the-park home runs), had the game-winning RBI in the 1992 playoffs against Houston. Mathews was a member of the four-time Florida Masters national title teams and were 36-0. He also hit .619 in the 1996 Puerto Rico Masters Tournament. He ended Florida’s national dominance when, playing for Tacoma, he helped the Cascades beat his former team in 1999. Mathew was inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County Old-Timers Baseball-Softball Association Hall of Fame. Photo donated by Marc Blau.
