They are No. 1! Members of the 1985 Steilacoom High School boys basketball team are all smiles after receiving the gold ball to celebrate their Class 1A state championship at the University of Puget Sound on March 2. It was the second straight title for the Sentinels, who also won in 1984. This time they beat Highland in the final game, 78-55, to close out a 23-2 campaign. This was the first season as head coach for Gary Wusterbarth (standing, second from left), who has gone on to win more than 500 games at Steilacoom and is still coaching as of 2018. To his right is longtime assistant coach Bruce Hayes, who as also an assistant to John Medak on the 1984 team. Both Wusterbarth and Hayes have been inducted into the WIBCA Hall of Fame. According to written accounts, team members included Jeff Staten, Rod Whatley, Scott Mahan, John Schenberg, Andy Wedding, Matt Burlingame, Dwight Laso, Deon Butler, Angel Sullivan, Rob Martin, Gene McColm and Bill Hart.
