A 1927 boys basketball team from St. Leo’s is pictured here in what was one of the city’s longest standing schools at the time when the transition to Bellarmine Preparatory School was nearly complete, as it opened in 1928 and bequeathed its first diplomas in 1929. St. Leo’s was founded in 1879 by Father J.B.A. Brondel that boasted a congregation of 18 on the corner of Division Street and Tacoma Ave. They relocated to South 13th Street and Yakima Ave. by the turn of the century when they purchased a political hall and built a massive 2,200 seat church that eventually burned to the ground and sent the congregation back to the school gym. The school’s Jesuit tradition started in 1911 and continues to this day.Lexicon
