Some retired famous boxers celebrating the 50th Golden Gloves stand in the ring during the boxing tournament held at the University of Puget Sound in 1999. The first Tacoma Golden Gloves event was hosted by the Tacoma Athletic Commission in 1949. Kneeling in the photo behind the framed commemorative posters are from left to right Sugar Ray Seales, Davey Armstrong and Leo Randolph, all successful and well known boxers. In the back row left to right are Pat McMurtry and Boone Kirkman, two former heavyweight boxers who are among the best boxers to come out of Tacoma. Tacoma's Sugar Ray Seales won 14 senior Golden Glove titles and won a gold medal in the 1972 Olympics, kick starting a successful pro boxing career. He won his first 21 pro fights before losing a close decision to “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler in Boston.
