Description

The 1960 Cheney Studs were one of the top amateur baseball teams in the nation, winning the American Amateur Baseball Congress (AABC) national championship that same year. The team was unbeaten in the Seattle City League that year and compiled a 38-15 overall record prior to beginning tournament play. They went on to go win the Washington State/British Columbia tournament, the Pacific Coast Regionals in Porterville, Calif., and advanced to a three-game playoff series against the Denver Blue Sox in Pierre, S.D., which the Studs won 3-1. That set up a meeting with the 1959 champions from Dearborn. Cheney beat the reigning champs 18-5 as Earl Hyder hit two doubles and two singles, driving in three runs, while Bob Maguinez drove in five runs with a home run and two singles. The team photo shows the players wearing their team jackets with the national championship banner and includes Hyder and Maguinez in the top row. Featured in the photo are founder and philanthropist Ben Cheney (back row, left), Jack George, Ned Brown, Maguinez, George Kritsonis, Jerry Jackson, Byron Johnson, Jeff Heath (coach), Monte Geiger, Joe Budnick (manager) and Gene Anderson (general manager). Front row, left to right, Jim Broulette, Norm Pfeiffer, Gary Snyder, Steve Whitaker, Hyder, Phil Swimley, Glen Mattison, Mike Gilis (trainer) and Bill Gillis (bat boy). The photograph was donated to this museum by Gene Anderson.
