Description

Spectators line the course to watch a golf tournament in Puget Sound while holding umbrellas during a rainstorm. Tacoma and Seattle has hosted major and mid-major PGA, LPGA, Senior PGA championships for decades thanks to some very well-designed golf courses. Some of those designs could be attributed to JohnHartbottle III of Tacoma. Harbottle III was the son of two hall-of-game golfers, Pat Lesser Harbottle and John Harbottle, Jr. Harbottle III began his own design business in 1991 and was featured in Golf Magazine, Links Magazine and The Golfer. Among his best known designs in the Northwest are the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain in Bremerton, Fircrest Golf Club in Tacoma, Portland Golf Club and Tacoma Countyr and Golf Club. He also was designing the Los Angeles Country Club North Course, which is scheduled to host the 2023 U.S. Open, upon his unexpected death at age 53.
