Description

Members of the 1920 all-area first team from Lincoln High School boys basketball team pose for a photo. Coached by Mr. McGee, they include, back row, left to right, Coleman Anderson, Clyde Kautz, Ray Novak, and Walter Moyer. Front row, left to right, Roger Erickson, Joe Mullen and Bill Benson. Benson was a team captain and guard. He later became the head baseball coach at Lincoln and is in the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame. Photo donated by David Mathews. Lincoln High opened in 1907. The school’s football team won the Northwest Championship in 1908 and the 1909 girls basketball team won a trophy as well. The 1918 football season saw the team outscore opponents 112-21, but were narrowly defeated by Everett for the state championship. In 1919 Lincoln was No. 1 in football, baseball and tennis.
