Description

To Gregory Schumacher's delight, a fringe benefit of winning the 1964 All-American soap Box Derby was meeting the New York Mets' manager George Weiss. Celebrities often showed up to watch the race that would draw about 70,000 fans. Schumacher became the first rider from Washington to win the national championship. The previous year in 1963, Tacoma's Joel Gorski placed ninth, making him the first to place in the top 10 from Washington.
