Description

The popularity and notoriety of the All-American Soap Box Derby would often draw famous movie and TV stars. The year that Tacoma's Gregory Schumacher won the national championship in 1964, Loren Green, Dan Blocker and Michael Landon from the popular TV series Bonanza showed up wearing their cowboy gear they wore on the TV show. Celebrities became a tradition at the All-American Soap Box Derby championship in Akron. Actors like Jimmy Stewart and Tom Hanks, presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan and NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt came to Akron to watch the race.
