Description

Here is a black-and-white photo taken in 1948 of the Starlight Boxing Gym in Tacoma. Pat McMurtry, who grew up in Tacoma and became a popular top-ranked heavyweight contender in the 1950s, worked out in this gym over the years. In 1954, when Murtry turned pro after a successful amateur career when he won a NCAA national title, he didn't suffer a loss in his first 16 pro fights, winning 12 by knockouts or TKOs. His pro record was 33-4-1 with 25 knockouts. McMurtry donated this photo of the gym.
