Description

In this 1951 black-and-white photo, Pat McMurtry, one of the best boxers to come out of Tacoma, is standing next to a car in the showroom of his sponsor, Mueller-Hardkens, a Buick car dealer in Tacoma. McMurtry, a 1949 graduate from Lincoln High School, won the Northwest Golden Gloves tournament in Seattle in 1950 and earned the right to compete in the national AAU tournament held in Boston. McMurtry went on to fight professionally and was the fifth-ranked heavyweight in the world in the late 1950s. In the first Golden Gloves tournament held in Tacoma back in 1948, McMurtry won his weight class. McMurtry, who was nicknamed Irish, was a popular sports figure during the 1950s.
