Description

Pat McMurtry gets ready for another amateur fight in 1951 with the help of his corner man Frankie “Chi Chi” Britt. McMurtry. McMurtry, who grew up in Tacoma and was born in 1933, had a successful amateur career, winning 103 of his 105 fights. As a young boy, his father, Clarence McMurtry, brought him and his younger brother, Mike, to Golden Glove events in Seattle to watch. Pat would later win titles in those fights. McMurtry turned pro in 1954 after serving in the Korean War in the Marines and became a heavyweight contender. On Oct. 27, 1958, McMurtry, nicknamed “Irish,” fought the Canadian champ George Chuvalo in New York City's Madison Square Garden on national TV. McMurtry defeated the gritty Chuvalo, who was 15-2-1 at the time, by a lopsided 10-round decision, bloodying the Canadian's nose in the eighth round and breaking it.
