Tacoma's Pat “Irish” McMurtry spars with trainer Homer Amundsen holding dummies in 1951. McMurtry, who focused on boxing while attending Tacoma's Lincoln High School and didn't play any other sports, got a boxing scholarship to Gonzaga University out of high school. His younger brother, Mike, who was 14 months younger, also got a scholarship to Gonzaga. But Pat quit boxing at Gonzaga and was going to join the formation of a new team at the College of Puget Sound. But the Korean War started and McMurtry joined the Marines. That didn't stop McMurtry from boxing as he ended up winning the All Marines title.Lexicon
