With a cast on his right arm, Pat McMurtry stands with his trainer Homer Amundsen at the 1951 AAU Nationals in Boston. McMurtry broke his right hand on the first night of the tournament but he continued to fight on. He won his next three fights by knockouts. He lost his last fight in the semifinals to the eventual winner, Jack Boutlier, by a decision. McMurtry won the first sportsmanship award of the 63 year history of the tournament for his courageous efforts. McMurtry had an impressive amateur career, winning 103 of 105 fights before turning pro in 1954.Lexicon
