Description

Pat McMurtry (far right) stands with his USMC buddies outside of a restaurant in Seoul, Korea. While in the Marines during the Korean War, McMurtry continued a successful amateur boxing career as he won the All-Marine title in the early 1950s. A broken hand cut short his chances of winning the All-Service championship. Before turning pro in 1954, McMurtry had a sparkling 103-2 record as an amateur. McMurtry won all four of his fights at the inaugural Tacoma Golden Gloves in 1949 to win a championship at 160 pounds. After his successful boxing career as a fighter, he worked 29 years as a referee for boxing.
