Pat “Irish” McMurtry throws some punches while in a bout fighting in the Marine Corps in 1952, continuing his successful amateur boxing career. He won the All-Marine title and only a broken hand prevented him from winning the the All-Service championship. McMurtry won 103 fights and lost only twice as an amateur before turning pro in 1954. During his pro career, McMurtry became a celebrity among Tacoma fans and was arguable the region's biggest sports star. In the summer of 1956, McMurtry, a graduate from Lincoln High School in Tacoma, fought two heavyweight bouts in Lincoln Bowl, drawing 10,729 fans and then 11,095 fans. The fights drew so much attention the Seattle Post-Intelligencer ran a special section on McMurtry on the morning of the second fight.Lexicon
