Pat McMurtry sits looking at a magazine with his trainer Homer Amundsen shortly after McMurtry's return from Korea after serving in the Marines. He wanted to turn pro as a boxer when he was 21, but the Korean War broke out and he served in Korea. Seeing a great deal of military action, McMurtry rose in rank to staff sergeant and earned three battle starts for combat action. He won the He won the 1952 All Marine championship in the 175 lb division and the Best Fighter Award, never losing a fight when he was a Marine. McMurtry had a spectacular amateur career, winning 103 of 105 fights before turning pro. McMurtry was very thankful for Amundsen's impact on his career.
