Description

Pat McMurtry referees an outdoor boxing match in June 30, 1953. After a long and successful boxing career, McMurtry refereed fights for 29 years. McMurtry grew up boxing in Tacoma and had a successful career. Before turning pro in 1954, the 6-foot-1 McMurtry had a 103-2 record as an amateur and was 33-4-1 as a pro and was ranked as high as fifth in the world. After beating Canadian heavyweight champ George Chuvalo in New York's Madison Square Garden in a nationally televised fight, the 6-foot-1 McMurtry had an opportunity to fight heavyweight champ Floyd Patterson, but the fight never happened because of a contract dispute. Later in a 1990 Tacoma News Tribune story, McMurtry said, “I should have taken the deal.” In one of his biggest wins, McMurtry defeated former heavyweight champ Ezzard Charles.
