Description

With a big smile, Pat McMurtry poses for a photo with his coach Frank “Chi Chi” Britt in 1953. Both McMurtry and Britt have been inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame for their accomplishments in boxing. McMurtry had an impressive 103-2 record as an amateur and he turned pro in 1954. In McMurtry's first 24 fights as a pro, he lost only once, had one draw and won 20 fights by knockouts. In the late 1950s after he was ranked as high as fifth in the world, he'd reluctantly turn down an offer to fight heavyweight champ Floyd Patterson. Britt fought in the 1920s and was McMurtry's trainer for many years.
