As part of his conditioning to prepare for his next fight, Pat McMurtry would roll on a medicine ball for three minutes at a time to strengthen his stomach. He'd workout at the gym in Tacoma on 9th and Commerce next to the Tacoma Athletic Commission. McMurtry had a successful amateur and pro boxing career. He was a championship-caliber boxer, going 103-2 as an amateur and as a pro he went 33-4-1 after winning his first 16 pro fights. He was ranked as high as the fifth heavyweight boxer in the world and starting in 1954 he became Tacoma's sports headline.Lexicon
