Pat McMurtry (right) stands with Homer Amundsen as McMurtry prepares to turn pro in 1954. McMurtry was born to be a boxer. His father, Clarence, who was an amateur boxer, said to his wife when they were married that they were going to have two sons and both were going to box. On Christmas in 1939, Clarence gave his two sons boxing gloves and he'd take them to the finals of the Golden Gloves in Seattle every year. Eventually, the two brothers would win that same tournament and they grew up to be very successful boxers. The two brothers are consider to be among the best boxers to come out of Tacoma. They've both been inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County Hall of Fame. In addition to his father's impact, Pat credited Homer for his contributions to their success boxing. “A lot of credit for our success can be traced right back to Homer,” he said.Lexicon
