Description

In the seventh pro fight of his career, Pat McMurtry delivered a left-handed punch to the head of a crouching Jim Murphy in this fight in Seattle on May 4, 1954. McMurtry defeated Murphy in a fourth round TKO, improving to 7-0. McMurtry won his first 16 pro fights, 12 by knockouts or TKOs. McMurtry's pro career ended in late 1959 when he was knocked out for 16 minutes in a fight in Portland, Ore., against the hard-punching Eddie Machen, who was 31-1-1 at the time. Tests after that fight showed McMurtry had suffered brain damage, affecting his balance. But McMurtry didn't say goodbye to boxing. He became a referee and refereed boxing matches for the next 28 years. He and his brother, Mike, have been inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame.
