With referee Davy Ward of Tacoma looking on, Pat McMurtry throws a left jab at an opponent in a fight back in 1954. It was McMurtry's first year of professional boxing after a successful amateur career when he won 103 of 105 amateur fights. Starting in 1954 when McMurtry turned pro, he became Tacoma's sports headliner. He didn't lose in his first 16 pro fights, suffering only a draw. Within a couple of years and after big wins against former heavyweight champ Ezzard Charles, McMurtry was the fifth ranked heavyweight fighter in the world.Lexicon
