Before a fight in 1954, Pat McMurtry sits and listens to advice from his trainer Homer Amundsen (left). McMurtry turned pro that year after a successful amateur career when he won 103 of his 105 fights. McMurtry had planned on turning pro earlier, but he ended up joining the Marines when the Korean War broke out in 1951. McMurtry would later say that Homer played a big role as a trainer in how he and his brother, Mike, did boxing. “He was one of the best teachers I've ever known,” Pat said. Amundsen owned Amundsen Gym in Tacoma and taught boxing to many successful amateurs.Lexicon
