Looking over his gloves, Tacoma's Patrick McMurtry moves in on Chuck Ross in a pro heavyweight fight back in 1954. McMurtry won the fight as he didn't suffer a loss in his first 16 pro fights. McMurtry turned pro that year and his father, Clarence, became his manager. Within a few years, McMurtry climbed to fifth ranked heavyweight in the world and had an opportunity to fight heavyweight champ Floyd Patterson but turned down the offer. But the agreement would include taking a new manager and that was something Patrick didn't feel comfortable with. His dad was his manager and he had worked with him his whole life, starting with when he was a young boy when he would fight his brother in exhibition bouts before main events. It was a decision that McMurtry would later regret. He could have become a world champion.Lexicon
