Tacoma's Pat “Irish” McMurtry works out on the speed bag in preparation for his next fight. McMurtry, who graduated from Lincoln High School in 1950, fought in the first Tacoma Golden Gloves in 1949 and after winning his weight division of 160 pounds was presented the Golden Boy award. McMurtry finished an impressive amateur career with a 103-2 record and began fighting professionally in 1954. Winning his first 16 fights, McMurtry ended up with a 33-4-1 pro career. He was ranked as high as fifth in the world and fought and beat several top ranked boxers, including former heavyweight champ Ezzard Charles. McMurtry was the region's biggest sports star of his day.Lexicon
