Pat McMurtry is considered to be one of the top boxers to ever come out of Tacoma. After an impressive amateur career when he lost only twice in 105 fights, McMurtry, who was nicknamed “Irish” by the national media, began a successful professional career in 1954. In the summer of 1956, McMurtry, a Lincoln High School graduate, fought twice in Lincoln Bowl, drawing crowds of 10,729 and 11,095. In the second fight, he earned $20,500 - his best payday. In 1959, the Tacoma heavyweight boxer was knocked out for 17 minutes by a left hook from Eddie Machen. That ended McMurtry's career as a boxer, but not his commitment to boxing. He refereed fights for 29 years. McMurtry won his first 16 fights as a pro and compiled an impressive 33-4-1 career, including 25 knockouts.Lexicon
