Description

Pat McMurtry poses for a photo that was taken in 1954, the year he turned pro. After going 103-2 as an amateur, McMurtry, who graduated from Lincoln High School, was among the top-ranked heavyweights in the world as a pro and was the Northwest's biggest sports star. After winning 103 of his 105 amateur fights, McMurtry, who was nicknamed “Irish Pat,” went 33-4-1 as a pro. In October 1958, McMurtry fought the Canadian heavyweight champion George Chuvalo in New York City in Madison Square Garden on national TV. He used Joe Louis' old dressing room. “My heart was pounding,” McMurtry said. With Joe Louis at ringside, McMurtry won a lopsided 10-round decision. Chuvalo would later lose to Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman and Floyd Patterson.
