Description

Pat McMurtry gets ready for another fight during his rookie year (1954) as a pro heavyweight fighter. Homer Amundsen, McMurtry's trainer, is in the corner picking up the stool. Judge Richmond stands wearing a ring apron. Neil Hoff is in the center looking over the apron. Pete Herman is the corner man in this photo.On the back of McMurtry's warmup robe, he has his nickname “Irish Pat.” McMurtry won 103 of his 105 amateur fights before turning pro and he became a heavyweight contender as a pro. As a local sports celebrity and a graduate from Lincoln High School, McMurtry fought twice at Tacoma's Lincoln Bowl in the summer of 1956 and a combined 21,824 cheering fans came to watch. Amundsen had his own gym in Tacoma and helped develop many young boxers over the years, including McMurtry.
