Description

Pat McMurtry poses at the Roxy Theater in downtown Tacoma prior to an exhibition fight. McMurtry was a top-ranked heavyweight boxer in the 1950s and a local celebrity. He beat former heavyweight champ Ezzard Charles and was ranked as high as fifth in the world. He became a popular crowd favorite. McMurtry and his younger brother, Mike, grew up boxing. Their father, Clarence, who was an amateur boxer, gave them boxing gloves for Christmas in 1939 when they were young kids.
